Mr. Tadashi Matsuda established his rum factory in Okinawa in 1961. It is the oldest in Japan. Production was mainly to meet a high demand from US military personnel based on the island at that time. As the southernmost region of Japan, Okinawa's unique subtropical climate is home to a distinctive sugarcane, which is used to make Teeda Rum. The remarkable characteristics of this rum come from its 3-week fermentation process of sugarcane molasses, and its distillation in copper pot stills and aging in new American oak barrels for at least 5 years. A rum for connoisseurs in search of strong emotions. No added sugar or coloring.
Helios Distillery
Mr. Tadashi Matsuda established Helios distillery in Okinawa in 1961. It is the oldest in Japan to produce rum. Production was primarily to meet strong demand from American military personnel stationed on the island at the time. As the most southerly region of Japan, Okinawa’s unique subtropical climate is home to the distinctive sugar cane. The Matsuda family produces white rum (Kiyomi) and rum aged in oak barrels (Teeda) made only from sugar cane molasses. The molasses fermentation is extremely long (30 days) to be then distilled in a copper pot still and then aged according to the range in oak barrels or not. For almost 60 years the Matsuda family has been producing rum and Aska, 4th generation, continues the tradition with her younger sister Akane. To compare to other Japanese rums, the very typical Helios style may make you think of "agricultural" rum. A powerful nose, a very straight mouth without adding sugar and with a beautiful length full of complexity. They age up to the age of 21 in real age, no "solera" and that is not given to everyone !
