Helios Distillery has launched a 21-year-old version, of its Teeda craft rum. Distilled in 1998 and bottled by the 3rd generation of the Matsuda family. Helios is the oldest distillery in Japan, producing rum since 1961, following the request of the American army present at that time in Okinawa. This rum is a distillate of local sugarcane molasses, in copper pot still. The sugar cane benefits from a mineral-rich soil and a tropical climate, which brings minerality and salinity to this rum. With a tropical climate and an average temperature of 22.5°C, this archipelago is the only place in Japan where sugarcane cultivation is possible. This rum has been aged for 21 years in new American oak barrels. A unique product, with only 2500 bottles on sale, all numbered.

Helios Distillery

Mr. Tadashi Matsuda established Helios distillery in Okinawa in 1961. It is the oldest in Japan to produce rum. Production was primarily to meet strong demand from American military personnel stationed on the island at the time. As the most southerly region of Japan, Okinawa’s unique subtropical climate is home to the distinctive sugar cane. The Matsuda family produces white rum (Kiyomi) and rum aged in oak barrels (Teeda) made only from sugar cane molasses. The molasses fermentation is extremely long (30 days) to be then distilled in a copper pot still and then aged according to the range in oak barrels or not. For almost 60 years the Matsuda family has been producing rum and Aska, 4th generation, continues the tradition with her younger sister Akane. To compare to other Japanese rums, the very typical Helios style may make you think of "agricultural" rum. A powerful nose, a very straight mouth without adding sugar and with a beautiful length full of complexity. They age up to the age of 21 in real age, no "solera" and that is not given to everyone !
